Nursing informatics is at the forefront of health care's future as a specialized field that combines data science, information analysis, and medical expertise. The focus is on utilizing healthcare data to create more efficiencies and better patient outcomes.

Public health knowledge is grounded in principles of epidemiology and influenced by genetics and genomics. Utilizing both principles, students will explore environmental health, ethical health disparities, and social justice issues.
It focuses on advanced scholarly activities utilized to conduct nursing research. The history of nursing research, steps utilized to conduct research, and differences between the utilization of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies are discussed.
It engages students in principles of evidence-based practice and knowledge translation. Topics include health care quality, patient safety, population health, and health care informatics/technologies.
It provides a framework of professional standards that serve as the foundation for nursing education, practice, and professionalism. The course immersed students in the profession’s historical roots, current, and future issues, roles, practice environments, and opportunities.
It requires students to explore leadership philosophies, design strategies for continued professional growth, and accept greater accountability as a leader in advancing healthcare. Students are paired with a mentor to participate in and reflect on leadership experiences for future integration of best practices in their advanced nursing roles.
It provides a basic foundation of the legal system and a broad analysis of laws that impact health care.
It provides the basic theoretical framework and knowledge base for information management within various settings.
It highlights familiar and new ethical concepts to consider when applied to informatics.
It explores various roles through the critical evaluation of current literature, current roles and future roles, professional values and standards, and a review of evolving competencies of nursing informatics practice.
It addresses the human-technology interface, explores human-technology interface problems, provides an overview of the purpose of conducting workflow analysis and design, explores meaningful use, and cites measures of efficiency and effectiveness that can be applied to redesign workflow efforts and processes.
It investigates the application of information technology and the impact of these interactions between healthcare providers and patients. The primary focus includes how patients are engaged and empowered by informatics technology, the application, and development of clinical decision-making tools, meaningful use, and the influence on patient outcomes and safety.
It explores project management concepts and skills related to implementing and evaluating information systems. The focus is to begin integrating all previous studies and to identify the focus of students’ final capstone project.
It provides an opportunity for the student to gain advanced informatics-related experiences in the healthcare clinical setting through a minimum of 120 hours of practice functioning under the supervision of an informatics professional.

I partnered with professionals from Sanford Medical Center Fargo to shadow, observe or interview while completing significant coursework assignments. I significantly learned about MIPS Assessment and Health Literacy in the Online Age during the interviews.

NUR 614 Resilient Nursing Leadership

The most significant development I had as a leader through this experience is to have more initiative, feel confident, and not be afraid to step up.
The most crucial experience was when I attended the SAFE Change Leadership Training with 200+ managers. I have learned how the organization fosters a positive culture and climate of change. Also, leadership includes conflict resolution, communication skills, systems thinking, and more. When I was there, I felt like it was our leadership textbook coming to life.

NUR 679 Nursing Informatics Seminar I

I headed an informatics capstone project entitled "The Impact of Increasing Patient Portal Enrollment and Utilization in Appointment No-Show Rates in Family Medicine Clinics" at SUNY Upstate Family Medicine. This experience has taught vital lessons on planning and designing informatics projects and conducting needs assessments. My communications skills were enhanced through collaboration with leadership, stakeholders, interdisciplinary teams, and presentations. I gained the confidence to lead and be part of a systems change in the future.

NUR 686 Nursing Informatics Seminar II

I acted as the project leader for the capstone project, which taught me vital lessons and experiences in research, leadership, and project management. It has improved my skills in effective communications, project management, and project outcome analysis. I leveraged resources well and exhibited flexibility brought by the inevitable circumstance that affected the project. The project obtained a positive impact on the practice and was overall successful.
